A Bit About Me

I am currently a student at Newcastle University studying Journalism, Media and Culture.

Alongside my degree, I am a Senior Editor for The Courier and TheCourierOnline, Newcastle University's award-winning student newspaper. As Head of Current Affairs, I oversee the section with a team of 18 sub-editors that report on News, Breaking News, Campus Comment, Opinion and Science.

Published | Featured in: The Courier, JESMONDLOCAL, ITV Tyne Tees, The Northern Echo.

I have 3 years of experience within the industry by completing modules on Media Law, Conflict & Crisis Reporting, Multimedia, Digital Audiences and Magazine Publishing.

  • Completed an Editorial Leadership course with News Associates.

  • Writing breaking news stories for The Courier and JESMONDLOCAL

  • Content Creator for Newcastle University + Newcastle University's Students Union.

I have a passion for video and audio production journalism and copywriting. I would love to find opportunities within this field and pursue my interests further after my degree.

Outside of my studies, I love to read books and watch films with my beloved Cineworld card. Since I was young, I have always loved telling stories and writing and have always been a way to share and discuss topics and conversations important to me. I also love exploring new cities, learning about history and trying new coffee spots! â€‹

Section Editor for Campus Comment

I edit submitted articles and upload articles onto WordPress. This includes adding images, excerpts, alt-text and scheduling for publication.
Additionally, I create newspaper layups for the print edition of The Courier which involves formatting and designing a two-page spread on Adobe InDesign.

Writer

As a contributing writer, I wrote two articles a week for different sections of the paper and submitted articles on WordPress. My main columns were Current Affairs, Campus Comment and Lifestyle and my articles have been published both in print and online.

Responsibilities ranged from writing a weekly opportunity newsletter for the School of Arts & Cultures, to running the blog and updating the site.
I researched and was up-to-date on all events and opportunities that may have  interest cohorts of fine art and media students, musicians, and journalists in the northeast and wider parts of the UK.

I also contact students and university alumni, to write for the SACS blog explaining their experience and advice for prospective industry employees.

I represent my degree programme at university open days, offer holder days and outreach projects. I give tours showing prospective students and parents the campus, host Q+A's and advocated for the active student community. I have group and one-to-one interactions sharing my experiences and explain the features of the undergraduate degree, as well as act as a liaison between students and faculty, providing feedback on the academic programme, curriculum development and student experiences.

In this role, I anchored an international pop-up newsroom on International Women's Day. I had the privilege to anchor stories from Newcastle University and it's community, talk to female academics in Taliban occupied Afghanistan about their education experience, and interview a Senior Editor of the New York Times, Alexa Mills.

My role includes administrative tasks, including bookings, risk assessments, and event management. I act as a liaison for the society with the students union and the School of Media, Culture and Heritage at the university. Highlights of this role included organising 2 summer balls for 60+ attendees and delivered workshops on LinkedIn. Additionally, I invited industry professionals to run sessions including an Adobe ambassador hosted an interactive event called 'Exploring AI with Adobe Express' and a journalist from PA Media hosted a conference reporting masterclass.

I tutored GCSE resit students online during my gap year for English in three colleges in London, Yorkshire and Manchester supporting students with their exams after the Covid-19 pandemic. I also worked on an additional project with YIPIYAP called On-Demand which involved creating pre-recorded video presentations and resources for students. I made 22 lessons on topics such as 'essay planning', 'how to improve grammar' and 'what to expect in the assessment'.
